Lauren Dreier was born in Hawaii, grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, and now lives and works in Hopewell, NJ. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in soft matter mechanics at Princeton University in the School of Architecture Computation and Energy program. She is advised by P.-T. Brun and Andrej Košmrlj of the Chemical and Biological Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering departments, respectively.
In both art and science, is interested in softness, i.e. the gray area between hard and soft. In science, she has studied nonlinear mechanics of beadwork, bobbin lace, and fluidic instabilities in additive manufacturing processes. Past creative works have taken shape as paintings, garments, performances, gardens, and scientific imaging to name a few — and this list of creative forms continues to grow as a consequence of her diverse interests, encounters, and ever-expanding tool collection.
